Set Goals, Not Resolutions
With the holidays coming to an end and the new year on the horizon, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of setting New Year's resolutions. Let’s face it, we all want to be the best version of ourselves. Little do we know that resolutions are setting us up for failure. Yes, you read that correctly, failure.
Why is that? Resolutions are proven to last for about a month. After this 4 week trial, people usually fall off the band wagon then suffer disappointment and lack of motivation to continue because these resolutions are not attainable.
So what’s the solution to achieving your best self? SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. These characteristics turn resolutions into goals that can be achieved.
Say you want to take up meditation in the new year, instead of making a resolution to meditate every day, I urge you to set a goal to meditate for three minutes, five times a week upon waking for two weeks. Once the two weeks are up, take a few minutes to reflect what went well then refine your goal. Which sounds more attainable? This particular SMART goal is time bound, relevant, measurable, and above all else, achievable.
Some of my goals include:
Committing to two days with phone free mornings each week. Phone free mornings will be one to two hours of technology free time after waking, ideally Monday and Saturday
Starting my day with 24 ounces of water each morning prior to breakfast
Spending one hour each Sunday to organize my client notes from the previous week
As a Holistic Nutrition Consultant my goal is to help clients set SMART goals during their journey to optimal health. I find clients resonate with these smart goals as they boost confidence and keep them on track. If you are looking to achieve optimal health in the new year, please reach out!
