The Power of Self Talk

Hi TPW Fam,

Last week we started with skills to become an optimist and today we will learn the importance of self talk, the second of seven steps to a positive mental attitude.

  • Become an optimist

  • Become aware of self talk

  • Ask better questions

  • Employ positive affirmations

  • Set positive goals

  • Practice positive visualization

  • Laugh long and often

Be aware of self talk.

We all talk to ourselves, there is constant dialogue taking place in our head. Our self talk is incredibly impressionable to our subconscious mind. In order to develop a positive mental attitude you must become aware of negative self talk and learn to reframe. Two skills to reframe negative thoughts are 1) asking better questions and 2) employing positive affirmations.

Ask better questions.

The quality of your life is equal to the quality of questions you habitually ask yourself. When faced with hardships we can either ask “why did this happen to me?” or “what do I need to learn from this situation?”

If you want to have a better life, simply ask yourself these questions on a consistent basis to take stock.

  • What must I do today to achieve my long term goals?

  • What am I enjoying most about in my life right now?

  • What am I most grateful about in my life right now?

  • What am I most happy about in my life right now?

Reframing thoughts will help to create a different way of looking at a situation, person or relationship by changing its meaning. Here is more information if this speaks to you.

Employ positive affirmations.

Just like this little boy who went viral (jump to 25 seconds), you too can incorporate affirmations to retrain your thoughts. Remember, repetition is key!

Some find adding a post-it note to their bathroom mirror with an affirmation or saying affirmations upon waking up are great starting places.

Some affirmations I love are as follows,

  • I possess the qualities needed to be extremely successful.

  • I believe in, trust, and have confidence in myself.

  • Happiness is a choice. I base my happiness on my own accomplishments and the blessings I've been given.

  • My thoughts are filled with positivity and my life is plentiful with prosperity.

  • I feed my body healthy nourishing food and give it healthy nourishing exercise because it deserves to be taken care of.

  • Accepting myself as I am right now is the first step in growing and evolving.

  • Other examples here and body image focused examples here

Always phrase affirmations in the present tense with a positive statement. Best success comes when you make the affirmation personal to you! Restructuring and reframing negative thinking patterns takes practice and awareness.

In good health,

Morgan
